Last week, I was in Nordstrom’s trying on a new pair of jeans. The first one didn’t go over my butt. The second one? (Don’t ask.) The third fit just right.
I don’t BUY a pair of pants until they fit, do you?
Why don’t we try on thoughts like we try on clothes?
How often does a thought like this cross your mind?
- I don’t have the leadership skills to grow my business to the next level.
- I’m too old to start anything new.
- I can’t possibly ask my partner for this.
Do any of these thoughts empower you? Do they move you in the direction you want to go?
I don’t think so.
Yet, it’s amazing how often we BUY into them.
There’s research that confirms the smarter you are, the more likely you are to struggle with an opportunity to rethink. Resistance kicks in when intelligent folks believe they know better than others and they have the right answers. They’re conditioned to believe if they’re right, they don’t need to question their thinking.
If we don’t question our thinking, if we don’t try on a new thought, we’re not taking advantage of what’s possible and what might be a better fit for us.
Our thoughts create our experience and drive our results.
They either work FOR us or AGAINST us.
And whether we know it or not, we can CHOOSE what we think – ALWAYS.
What would be possible if you tried on a new thought:
- What if the opposite was true and I could learn new leadership skills?
- What if age wasn’t a factor; what do I want to do next?
- If I could ask my partner, what would I ask for?
Can you see the benefit of trying on a new thought?
(And you don’t even need to find a dressing room.)
If you have made it this far, thank you for joining me as I step into the unknown!
